Juxtaposition part 1

The 3D fundamentals module is all about hands-on experience and this time was no exception - Making a model for our final assignment. The topic given was 'Juxtaposition' and honestly, I had not a single clue on what I should be doing. My initial idea was on shark-finning(don't ask why, I probably don't have the answer) but it was weak and too shallow to develop into a model(well, my thinking was.)

When it comes to projects where we are to think up designs on our own, I take a horrendous amount of time to brainstorm - if that doesn't give you a good idea of how bad it is, I can boldly say that I took one week out of the three given just to choose a topic for the O Levels Art paper 2. Scared now? I definitely am.

After a one week of racking my brains out, I still had an empty mind on the day where ours ideas should be presented to the lecturer. My last-minute resort was to think up ideas on the bus(which I didn't because I fell right asleep the moment I sat down)  and draw them out in class while the other students go first.

Then, while sketching out my rough ideas, I took a look at my artist references for inspiration and an image came straight to mind.

The image from my printer(that was low on ink) made the cliffs look like flowers and that was all it took to link it to an idea; I chose Life/Death(or Purity/Corruption) for the theme.

The lecturer recommended me to take up the idea out of the other three and I began planning for the materials, but I still had to consult my father for advice.

I took a trip to Art Friend and found the perfect material - Styrofoam. The thick ones are no doubt firm and fortunately light-weight. However, I am absolutely hopeless at measurements, so my father took some time off and helped me to do the aesthetics and the rough work of cutting the foam and acrylic.

Just look at his collection of tools! And wait - that's just half of it.

I also got polymer clay (Sculpey) and some wooden(I have the plastic ones that aren't sufficient) sculpting tools as I have handled this medium before and I quite like it.

All I needed was a beige tinted clay and sculpting tools before I went off sculpting for the whole day(I finished the torso by the end of class and continued at home)

let's shake hands!
my pride of this figure is oddly in the feet.

I gave it soles although I knew nobody would ever be able to see it.

As for the flowers, I chanced upon some tiny flowers made of silk and that spared me from making a whole load of miniature petals from clay or paper which I know would be extremely difficult. The colour wasn't what I needed it to be, so I took some acrylic paint and then painted it over with a shimmering red medium to give a dried up look to it instead of the boring matt roses.
